Marc van Wegberg studied economics at the University of Tilburg from 1976 to 1983. Subsequently, he spent about a year doing research on dynamic competition at the Tilburg Institute for Academic Studies (TIAS, it is now an education-only institute). He wrote his doctoral thesis at the University of Maastricht on multi-market competition. The thesis focused on reciprocal entry between multiple markets, and on the effects that blurring market boundaries (convergence) have on competition. He participated as PhD student ('AIO', in Dutch) in the micro-economics group in the period 1987 to 1992. Since 1992 he is assistant professor at the University of Maastricht , at the department of Organization and Strategy.
