Recent activities of Department members
(12-7-2009) The General Assembly has elected Professor
Robert Roe
as President of the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations (EFPA).
The appointment applies for the period of four year, from 2009 to 2013. EFPA comprises 35 national associations with in total an estimated 250.000 members. His main focus initially will be the implementation of EuroPsy, the European Certificate in Psychology.
(9-4-2009) The crisis notwithstanding, the Department is hiring. One vacancy has now been filled: Meet Berpke the Department dog. Berpke takes a cautious, less than welcoming attitude towards visitors of the Department. Be friendly, very friendly.
The 5th
PhD Workshop and Conference on Global and Cross cultural
Management.
The date of the conference is 7-12 June 2009. The workshop is hosted by DOME, the Doctoral Program
in Organization and Management Education, and the UM School of
Business and Economics. Guest Lecturers include Geert Hofstede,
Mark F. Peterson, Gert Jan Hofstede and Michael Minkov. The
Coordinators of the workshop and conference are Mikael
Søndergaard of the University of Aarhus and Martin Carree of

(23-4-2009) Professor
Robert Roe
delivers his valedictory address. The title in Dutch is 'Zo kan het
ook'.
(14-12-2008) The department starts a new initiative. It will
grant annual distinctions to department members providing strong
performance. The 2008 period will be the start
of this initiative. This year's award winners are:
O&S senior research award:
Sarianna Lundan. In 2008 the Multinational Enterprises and
the Global Economy volume (co-author: John Dunning) was
published. The 920 pages book was well received by the academic
community. Since International Business as field is crucially
important for FEBA, having an author of such a piece of academic
work in the department is of great value.
O&S junior research award:
Katrin Hussinger and Omar Solinger. Both Katrin and Omar
achieved an A-publication in 2008. Katrin in Journal of
Applied Econometrics 23 (single authored) and Omar in
Journal of Applied Psychology 93. Katrin has furthermore a
2008 publication in Economics Letters and a Research
Policy publication forthcoming for next year.
O&S education award: Peter
Bollen and Bas van Diepen. Both Peter and Bas are long-time
faculty employees and have devoted considerable energy in tutoring
and designing courses. They have consistently achieved good
evaluation grades as lecturers. They have been able next to a
considerable teaching load to have publication output. Peter is
internship coordinator, is about to start a new course on
operational strategy in the new MSc IB business intelligence. He
is ass. editor of JIST:
http://www.jist.info/ Bas is coordinator for O&S of the 1.1
MOM course and the new human resource management course in block 5
of the 2nd year IB bachelors. In addition, he has helped setting
up the successful case competition skill and the master course
strategic topics in HRM.
O&S tutor award: Bart
Wijnhoven. Bart has been tutoring for some time at O&S now
(since 2006) and has been receiving excellent to good grades by
the students. As every full-time junior lecturer (TD) he teaches a
wide variety of courses and is, as such, highly important for the
educational quality delivered by O&S.
(14-11-2008) Mrs. Anneloes Raes defends her
dissertation 'Top Management Team Impact on Organizations:
Determinants from Inside and Outside the Boardroom'. She prepared
the dissertation as PhD student at our department. Her thesis
supervisors at our department have been Prof. Dr. Robert Roe and
Prof. Dr. Mariëlle Heijltjes. Mrs Raes is now with the Universität
St.Gallen at the Institut für Führung und Personalmanagement
(Institute for Leadership and Human Resource Management).

On Friday October 12, 2007, Fons Naus defends his dissertation. The title of his doctoral thesis is Organizational Cynicism. The time is 14:00 and the venue is the Aula of the University of Maastricht, Minderbroedersberg 4-6. Fons left the Department to become lecturer at the University of Tilburg.

On Wednesday January 24, 2007, Jasper Kok, PhD student at our Department, defended his dissertation. The title of his doctoral thesis is Entrepreneurial Decisions in a Social Context. The time is 16:00 and the venue is the Aula of the University of Maastricht, Minderbroedersberg 4-6.

Prof. Dr. John Hagedoorn accepted the Harry Martens special chair 2006 - 2007 in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Hasselt (Belgium). Prof. Hagedoorn owes this distinction to his research in technology alliances.

Ad van Iterson, in his dual role as resident author of the Department, published his latest novel. Called De Citoyenne (in Dutch) or The
Citizeness, it revisits Maastricht's gloriously infamous industrial heritage. Maastricht joins the ranks of cities like Dublin, The Hague, and Saint Petersburg that have a literary life as well as a geographic one. For the Dutch publisher's page, click on Nieuw Amsterdam.

(1-6-2006) The Department of Organization and Strategy inaugurates the Geert Hofstede Chair on Cultural Diversity. The chair is named to honour Prof. Dr. Geert Hofstede's tenure at our Department from 1985 to 1993. Prof. Dr. Mark F. Peterson, of the Florida Atlantic University, is the first incumbent on the Geert Hofstede Chair on Cultural Diversity. A symposium celebrated the start of the new Chair in the presence of both Geert Hofstede and Mark Peterson.
(29-4-2006) Anita van Gils received the best paper award at the 2006 FERC (Family Enterprise Research Conference). Her co-authors are Yannick Bammens and Wim Voordeckers from Hasselt University, Belgum. The award is for their article 'Effective Corporate Governance in Terms of Trust and Control: A Dynamic View of Family Firms'.
(17-3-2006) Prof. Dr. Cas W. Vroom takes his retirement leave with the Department of Organization & Strategy. His valedictory address is today, 16:00 in the aula of the University Main Building, Minderbroedersberg 4-6. The title is 'Do we understand each other? The English language as a means of communication in business studies: a divertimento with a serious undertone'.
(21-10-2005) Together with Allard Bruinshoofd, Dr. Wilko Letterie received The 2005 Hennipman Prize for the article “Investment and Finance when Liquidation is Costly” which appeared in De Economist, 2004, vol. 152, pp. 21-45. This prize rewards the best article in De Economist in the years 2003-2004. The report of the jury will appear in one of the next issues of this journal.
(12-9-2005) A paper by Ad van Iterson is nominated by the JIBS/AIB/CIBER conference. The paper co-autored with R.L. Olie (Erasmus University) is titled "International variations in leadership: The teamness of teams". The organization is the 3rd Annual JIBS/AIB/CIBER invitational conference on emerging research frontiers in international business.
(7-9-2005) Boris Lokshin today defended his dissertation "Performance Effects and Complementarity of Internal, Cooperative and External R&D". His promotores were Prof. Dr. Martin Carree en Prof. Dr. Rene Belderbos. Dr. Lokshin continues his work in our Department as Researcher.

Dr. Peter Berends coached a student team from our Faculty to participate in the Global Business Challenge finale of the University of Washington Business School, in Seattle. Student members of our Maastricht team were Saskia Ernstson, Leonie Baneke, Sam Renkema and Gero Kahlen. The Global Business Challenge (info here) is an annual international case competition for undergraduate university students from the United States and 12 - 14 other countries to compete in a business case study. This week-long event provides students a chance to build cross-cultural relationships, experience the city of Seattle and participate in a real-world case study to analyse and develop a business recommendation within 48 hours. Each team presented their solution to a panel of judges who selected the Global Business Challenge Champions. The Maastricht team finished as finalist, quite an honorable achievement!

(20-4-2005) Today our former PhD student Wilfred Schoenmakers defended his dissertation "Knowledge Flows between Multinational Companies: A Patent Data Analysis". His promotores were Prof. Dr. John Hagedoorn and prof. Dr. Geert Duysters. Wilfred continues his carreer at the Universiteit Diepenbeek, Belgium.
(8-4-2005) Myriam Cloodt today defended her dissertation "Mergers & Acquisitions in High-Tech Industries: Measuring the Post-M&A Innovative Performance of Companies". She wrote it as PhD student of our department. Her promotor was Prof. Dr. John Hagedoorn. Myriam is now active as Researcher at the Technical University Eindhoven, Department of Technology Management.
(17-12-2004) For the 2004 junior teacher award the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration selected our Department member Niels Schieman (home). Mr. Schieman is persistently highly regarded by his students. He went beyond regular teaching to make several contributions to coordinating courses. Having been a pleasant colleague at our department for three years, Niels Schieman will now leave us to become coordinator and teacher in Human Resource Management at Hogeschool Zeeland.
(9-12-2004) Peter Bollen, lecturer at our department, today defended his doctoral thesis "On the applicability of requirements determination methods" at the University of Groningen. The promotor of Dr. Bollen is Prof. Dr. Ir. J.L. Simons.

Dr. Mariëlle Heijltjes, former Associate Dean of Education of our Faculty, has been invited to serve as a member of the 2005 Annual Industry Conference Advisory Group of the Graduate Management Admission Council ( GMAC ), the organization that owns and provides the GMAT.
(24-9-2004) Walter Hendriks, former PhD student at our department, today defended his doctoral thesis "Top Management Team Diversity & Firm Performance. An empirical study on Belgian and Dutch IT firms". Dr. Hendriks continues his career as Assistant Professor at our Department.
(19-12-2003) Dr. Wim Swaan, Assistant Professor at our Department, has won this year's award of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration for Excellent Senior Teacher of the year 2003. The award consists of a €5000 personal budget for academic activities.
(12-12-2003) Prof. Dr. Paul van der Grinten retired today at age 70 as professor in Corporate Planning at our Department. He has been with us since 1991. Prof. Van der Grinten held a Departure Lecture and a very lively and extremely busy reception for his guests (see photo).
(1-9-2003) The Institute for Scientific Information (Thomson ISI) has ranked the head of our Department, Prof. John Hagedoorn, at number 79 in their top 100 of worldwide most cited scientists in the field of economics and business. The ranking is based on an analysis of citations of academic papers. For more information see the website of Thomson ISI .
(1-9-2002) The Department of Organization & Strategy is formed as a merger between the Department of Organization and the Department of Strategy.
