The NSI focuses on social and    organizational innovations to improve the development and use of talent and know-how and ultimately firm performance. NSI believes that this can only be achieved if science, business and social organizations join forces. By focusing research on issues that firms and other organizations face in real life, and by studying these issues with a scientific approach, we will be able to gather knowledge about social innovation processes that are of direct importance to the economy.

Mission

Maastricht University is home to several internationally reputed research groups active in fields at the core of NSI’s mission. These include the expertise available in the various departments of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (Organisation & Strategy, Marketing, Economics, and Educational Research & Development); the Research Centre for Education & the Labour Market (ROA); UNU-MERIT; and the Labour & Care research group of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.

The ambition of this network is to join these forces, bring new and talented researchers in these areas to Maastricht, and strengthen cooperation with companies and organisations with the aim of creating an institute with large international appeal that directly contributes to the regional economy. If the province of Limburg is capable of further developing its leading academic position in social innovation, its economy – more so than other regions – will benefit, and Limburg will thus set an example in the area of social innovation in Europe.
