reporting of enterprises and public companies in
particular, has increased tremendously. Within the
European Union the rules governing such reporting
were uniformed in 2005, resulting in a huge step
forward towards more transparency of the
European capital market. The uniformization was
achieved through the compulsory implementation
of the International Financial Reporting Standards
(IFRS) on the consolidated annual accounts of
European stock exchange securities. My Chair
concentrates on researching the effects of these
standards, as well as on the application of not just
these standards but also the remaining rules for
financial reporting, which I teach in the postgraduate
programmes at the Universiteit
Maastricht Business School. There I can contribute
my practical experience in drawing up annual
accounts of public enterprises and my wide
experience with international reporting standards.
My research focuses on three areas. First of all, I
study reporting standards and other rules for
financial reporting from the companies’ practical
point of view. Furthermore, I am interested in the
way in which shareholders, investment analysts
and other users of the annual account use financial
information. Lastly, I look into the establishment of
new standards, and how stakeholders play a part in
the preceding ground laying process.
My Chair, which takes up about 10% of my time, is
complemented by my job as Senior Accounting
Officer at DSM in Heerlen. It is an ideal
combination that enables me to team up the daily
practice of drawing up annual accounts and
interim financial reports with education and
research. In addition, I play an active role in several
official bodies that are involved in the realisation
and application of financial reporting standards.”
