Message from the Director

The Centre of Full Employment and Equity Europe (CofFEE-Europe) is a research centre attached to the Department of Economics at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. CofFEE-Europe was opened in October 2001. The centre’s mission is to promote research aimed at restoring full employment and achieving an economy that delivers equitable outcomes for all.

We believe that the achievement of full employment requires a bold public sector and a return to shared values. We also believe that Europe needs more academic debate about the causes and persistence of unemployment. The current supply-side orthodoxy has failed to deliver either satisfactory explanations or solutions. CofFEE is committed to providing research to stimulate that debate.

We stimulate debates about unemployment and employment policies through  workshops, conferences, seminars and Masters and PhD thesis projects. In addition, CofFEE aims to develop a collaborative research network comprising committed economists who would like to work on several projects with a European focus. We work in close cooperation with the Center of Full Employment and Equity, University of Newcastle, Australia.

Our first workshop in October 2002 was on the underutilisation of Europe's labour resources. Click here for the programme and the proceedings.

The projects we are currently working on are (1) Social Policy in the EU and (2) the development of the CLMI - the CofFEE Labour Market Indicators - for various European countries, cf. research projects, PhD projects and other research. Our working papers and occasional papers are published in the CofFEE Working Paper Series. You can subscribe to our mailing list.

We also welcome community involvement in our activities and are available for public lectures. Our research staff regularly speak at professional and public policy conferences.

I hope we can all work together to restore full employment and equity in Europe. This needs a bold public sector and a return to shared values. CofFEE is committed to providing research support to achieving this end.
